The World's Largest Insects From New Zealand
This is clearly not good news for those who suffer from entomophobia, or a phobia of insects. A former ranger who was traveling in New Zealand found the largest insect in the world: a Weta.
Stretch of wings reached 18 cm, while weight is 3 times the weight of mice.
"The three of us along this small island for two nights, combing plants in search of giant Weta," said Mark Moffett, 55. "Already we have spent many hours without success, before we finally saw this insect in the tree. Weta giant is the largest insect in the world, and we found this was the largest ever."
Most people are terrified at the sight of a giant Weta - but Moffett actually put the insect in the palm of his hand and gave him a carrot to eat.
"He enjoys carrots which I give, he seems to ignore it was in our hands," said Moffett, who deliberately fed slowly because they do not want to risk endangering the insect. After taking a photo, Moffett giant Weta was put back into the tree.
Weta 180 million years old, already existed before dinosarurus, but was thought to have become extinct.
